Light-driven transformation of biomass into chemicals using photocatalysts – Vistas and challenges

Lignocellulosic biomass has become an important sustainable resource for fuels, chemicals and energy. It is attractive source alternative fuels green because it non-edible widely available in the planet huge volumes. The use of as starting material to produce leads closed carbon cycle promotes circular economy. Although there are many thermo-chemical methods such pyrolysis, liquefaction gasification close at hand processing lignocellulosic transforming derived compounds into valuable photocatalytic method more advantageous utilizes light ambient conditions reforming said compounds. Appraisal recent literature indicates a variety systems involving different catalysts, reactors studied this purpose. This article reviews developments on oxidation its derivatives value-added chemicals. nature molecules, photocatalysts, efficiency photocatalysts terms conversion selectivity, influence reaction sources, effect additives mechanistic pathways discussed. Importance been given also discuss complementary technologies that could be coupled with photocatalysis better biomass-derived molecules A summary these aspects, conclusions future prospects end.
